Wandcaster

Description: These wizards are by no means different from the standard wizard. There are both mages and specialist wizards who call themselves Wandcasters. Wandcasters do not cast spells as normal wizards, instead of memorizing them normally, they channel their spells through wands (or other items). In fact, the wizard stores the spells in his wand in stead of his brain, and then casts the spell straight from the wand. They still need to "memorize" spells from their spellbooks, but they store the spell memorized in wands.

As the name would apply, a Wandcaster’s item of power is usually a wand. Other items can be used, and the most common of these are staves and precious gems of all sorts.

Wandcasters must have minimum scores of Int 15 and Wis 12. There are no alignment restrictions.

Barred: No wizards are barred from this kit, but Enchanters and Transmuters seem to be numerous amongst the Wandcasters. Few Necromancers or Abjurers take this kit.

Role: Wandcasters are often advisors to kings and rulers, but the adventuring Wandcasters is not terribly uncommon.
Secondary Skills: Any, although Scribe is most likely.
Weapon Proficiencies: Wandcasters are limited as other wizards.
Nonweapon Proficiencies:
Bonus: Reading/Writing.
Recommended: Ancient or local history, religion, spellcraft, agility casting.

Equipment: Wandcasters always carry a non-magical wand (or other item, see Special Benefits below), which is usually carved with runes of magic, and often appear like "normal" magical wands. The wands detect as magical with Detect Magic and similar spells. The wandcaster must prepare his wand (or special item) for 2d10 days before using it. If the Wandcaster loses his wand (or special item) and has not the time to brake the new one in, he must make an intelligence check at -3 each time he attempts to cast a spell. If the check fails, the magic fizzles.

Special Benefits:
As the Wandcaster casts his spells straight from the wand, the wand, in fact replacing the somatic component for the spells. Material Components are stored in special pouches and simply vanish from these as the spell is cast. Casting spells in this way has two main benefits. The first is that the Wandcaster has the casting time of the spell reduced by 1 per 5 levels (1 at 1st level, 2 at 5th, 3 at 10th etc.). No spell is ever reduced below 1 in any case. Spells with casting time measured in rounds or longer are not affected.

The second benefit is that it is very difficult to see what spell the Wandcaster is casting, unless the effects are visual, at which time it is often to late. Anyone attempting to use Spellcraft to determine what spell the Wandcaster is casting must check at 1/3 his normal chance (the formula for a wizard with Int 17 goes as follows: (17-2)/3=5. The wizard has to roll a 5 or less on a die twenty to see what the Wandcaster is trying to do).

Special Hindrances:
The main setback of being a Wandcaster is simple; If the Wandcaster ever looses his wand (or other special item) he is in deep doodoo and must find a new item and break it in, see Equipment for more details.

Another side effect is that because the wand (or item) used detects as magical, enemy wizards often try to steal the wands for their own personal use (only to be disappointed, of course, only the owner of the wand can cast spells from it, as an Identify spell will show)

Wealth Options: Wandcasters start with (1d4+1) x 10 gps like other wizards.

Races: Anyone able to become a wizard can become a Wandcaster. Humans, however, seem to be especially drawn to this kit, as elves and gnomes seem tofavor traditional wizardry.
